AI is a double polluter

I’ve come to think of AI as a double polluter. Not only are the energy and water costs enormous for most of the unnecessary use cases, but the output goes on to pollute the cultural commons. One there and ingested into training models, it’s impossible to remove.

There are useful uses for AI, but writing an e-mail or a blog post for you is not one. Nor is making an image or video when there are so many out there already created by humans.

It’s the equivalent of being thirsty, but instead of turning on the tap, you get in a massive fossil fuelled SUV, drive 400m up the road, buy some bottled water, drink it and throw the plastic bottles down the storm drain.

And then complain that there are microplastics in your body and energy prices are expensive.
